Play Writing

A 10-week play writing course aimed at anyone aged 16+ hoping to build their confidence in creative writing for the stage.

Following the framework of National Theatre’s programme for emerging playwrights; New Views. Each week participants will gain insights and use scenes from today’s most influential professional playwrights including: David Hare, Richard Bean, Roy Williams, Moira Buffini, Lucy Prebble, Alecky Blythe, Rebecca Lenkiewicz and Simon Stephens.

Through practical exercises, participants will develop approaches to Story, People, Narrative, Scenes, Style and Stagecraft to create new plays and/or hone existing work

All sessions will be facilitated by Melanie Whitehead who has worked in theatre for over 20 years including for the RSC, National Theatre, Geese Theatre Company, Roald Dahl Estate & Hay Festival.

This 12-session course takes place over 14-weeks with monthly opportunities to share your work to date at our monthly script sharing group; a great opportunity to receive feedback from other like minded people.

The course culminates in a chance to have actors workshop your scripts and to share them in front of an invited audience. Submission to this is not obligatory but we have found is a great way to channel your efforts and supports our ethos of The Old Electric being a home for new writing in Blackpool.
