Writer in Residence: Conversation Drop In

Event details

25 April at 12:00 pm 3:00 pm

Free | 16+

As part of her residency at The Old Electric Martha Pailing invites artists, non-artists, creative-all-the-timers and creative-some-of-the-timers for an afternoon chat and a brew*.

I want to chat to people. I am interested in how we choose to communicate our feelings, particularly our personal relationships with laughter. These conversations will inspire & inform my writings whilst at the venue so please do come along – anything from the bizarre to the mundane is very much welcomed.

Things I am curious about that we might talk about: ‘If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry’ – will we really? What does it mean to ‘laugh it off’? Who do we reserve our laughter for? Is it okay to laugh at really horrible things? How much fake laughter is too much? Should we be laughing every day? Is laughter actually good for the soul? Does laughter = happiness?

*Essentially, if you have ever laughed in your life, pop along.

About Martha Pailing

Martha Pailing is a writer, spoken word and performance artist. Her writing often blends personal material with fictional characters to create absurd and tender narratives. MP’s work considers what it is to remain empathetic and soft in a brutal, emotionally temperamental world.

MP’s past work includes commissions for the Roundhouse, The Royal Court, Essex Book Festival, METAL Southend and Penned In The Margins. She has performed across the UK including the Roundhouse, The Royal Court, the Barbican Centre, LADA, People’s Palace, Curve Theatre, Bootleg Social and, of course, The Old Electric.
